		<description>i think the &quot;why we lie&quot; article describes people&#039;s lying habits pretty well and gives an accurate explanation -- people lie to preserve some illusion of their ideal self. the principle might be extrapolated to include people&#039;s views of their countries as well/religions, i guess anything they can associate themselves with. 
another mechanism for putting yourself first seems to be relegating negative behavior (violence, theft, an instance of stupidity, etc.) as atypical or externalizing it. ex: &quot;i wouldn&#039;t have stolen if the economy wasn&#039;t so bad.&quot; &quot;I was tired so i screwed up on the interview.&quot; what do you think?</description>
