Forged image of soldiers killed in Iraq retracted by Associated Press

San Antonio Express-News photo journalist Bob Owen, believing the photograph of Dawson had been altered, notified AP, which agreed and pulled down the photo immediately. AP sent a “photo elimination” notice to its subscribers nationwide that said the photo was “digitally altered and does not accurately reflect the scene.”

… Their poses, body types, placement in front of a U.S. flag and their camouflage uniforms, down to the creases, were identical.

“I’d like to think that the media holds itself pretty accountable and we try really hard to keep high standards,” Owen said. “Obviously the army, and the government, doesn’t see anything wrong with that [photo altering] at all.”

Surely the Army has no reason to lie compulsively – to provide doctored materials where real materials must surely exist?

Stepping back a bit, how did these soldiers die?

A US soldier has allegedly opened fire on a superior and another unit member, killing them both, the US Army said today.

The dead soldiers have been identified as Staff Sergeant Darris Dawson, 24, and Sergeant Wesley Durbin, 26.

This is exactly the type of thing that must never be spoken of at the Army Experience Center. Just another isolated incident.

This is about as proud as I get to have been born an American.
